How often should I clean my mini-split?
Clean the filters about every two weeks when the unit is in regular use, and have the indoor coil, blower wheel and drain professionally cleaned when you see dirt, smell mustiness or lose airflow. Both Daikin and Mitsubishi Electric recommend cleaning the filters once every two weeks, and Mitsubishi explains why: dirty filters cause condensation in the unit that contributes to the growth of mold.
Why do mini-splits get moldy in Florida?
The coil is cold and wet every time the unit cools, and the Florida Climate Center notes summer dew points around 70°F with humidity above 90% at night. Dust on a wet coil and blower wheel is exactly where mold grows. The Department of Energy lists mold growth from plugged condensate drains as a health hazard, which is why the drain is part of any proper clean — see leaking water if yours is dripping.
What can I do myself?
- Switch the unit off at the breaker before opening the front panel.
- Remove, rinse and fully dry the mesh filters; refit them dry.
- Wipe the front panel and louvers with a damp cloth.
- Keep the outdoor unit clear of plants and debris.
Leave the coil and blower wheel to a technician — the fins bend easily, and water in the wrong place can reach the electronics.
What does a professional deep clean include?
Typically: covering the wall and using a cleaning bag, cleaning the coil and the blower wheel (where mold often hides), flushing the drain pan and line, and checking the outdoor coil. Many technicians check operating temperatures at the same visit. If you want someone who does this regularly, our Florida mini-split referral line connects you with technicians who work on ductless systems.
Signs it's more than dirt
A sweet or chemical smell, ice, a code on the display, or weak cooling after cleaning can point to a refrigerant leak or another fault. Rattles and hums belong on noise and outdoor-unit problems.
